Bio: Matthew Pope

Matthew is a 28 year old Canadian microbiologist currently working at the Pearson Lab at the University of Victoria, Canada. He is currently working as part of an international consortium on developing a generic, high throughput method that will allow validation of biomarkers as a prelude to development of clinical diagnostic tests using human blood plasma. Matt comes to the Pearson Lab after having spent 6 months in Kenya researching trypanosomiasis-resistant and susceptible murine strains and bovine breeds at the International Livestock Research Institute.

By the age of 25 Matthew had worked and travelled his way to all of the continents (including Antarctica), and to the high Arctic. Before his love of science brought him back to academia in 2003, he had a successful guiding career for 6 years, working in locations as varied and remote as Tierra del Fuego, New Zealand, Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, Patagonia, Siberia, the Canadian Arctic, and Greenland. Matt has also travelled independently to numerous places such as Borneo, Peninsular Malaysia, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Sweden, the UK, Spain, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya and most recently Madagascar.

In addition to more than 15 years sailing experience, Matthew has now logged over 3,000+ hours twin/single-engine Zodiac experience, holds a 60-tonne masters (captains) certificate, and also the Canadian Yachting Associations highest 'Gold Sail' certification.

Matthew is based in Victoria, BC, Canada.
